Antonia Levi's book Samurai from Outer Space is an academic examination of the popularity of anime and manga both in Japan and America.  Even though Levi's book considers the phenomenon of both anime and manga, it is still a valuable research resource for anyone considering the meaning of manga and the source of its rise in popularity.

The back of the book includes a list of recommended reading and a glossary of important Japanese terms.
