Tezuka Osamu (1928-1989)
Widely considered the father of modern manga, Tezuka Osamu (手塚 治虫) is one of the most influential figures in Japanese literature. He was extremely prolific, with a body of work that numbers over 400 and spans across mediums, from manga to animation. He is most widely known for his works "Astro Boy," "Phoenix," and "Black Jack." Tezuka is also responsible for many of the traits we associate with manga today, including big eyes, and is even credited with the first shojo, or girl's, manga.
