500 Manga Heroes and Villains - Created
Helen McCarthy's book 500 Manga Heroes and Villains showcases "500 of the genre's leading heroes and villains" and can provide a useful starting point for research about manga.
McCarthy's book is unique in that it lists a lot of characters who may not be as well known as others, some even from titles not yet available in English. However, even though it was published as recently as 2006, there are sections that date the information. In some entries, it is obvious that McCarthy had not yet read all of the series before writing about it, which can lead to her conjectures being given as plot, sometimes incorrectly. It does provide a great overview of a large number of characters, manga, and authors and is a good foundation for more specific research.
