Media support for images
For image files (e.g. TIFFs, JPGs, PNGs), Digital Collections uses the Universal Viewer which uses the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF). This support provides various features.
Known file type support*:
Image/tiff
Image/jpeg
Image/jpg
Image/jp2
Image/png
Image/bmp
*There may be support for more image file types. These are the ones that are currently represented in DC.
Viewing options
When there is more than one image, there are several ways to browse through the images. There are image thumbnails in the CONTENTS tab on the left. There are also arrows to go forward, backward, first image, last image at the top-center of the viewer.
When rolling over the viewer, additional options become available. Zoom in (+), zoom out (-), and rotate icons to the upper left of the image help users get a better view of the image. There are also forward backward button to the left and right of the image.
Full Screen mode
Click the icon in the lower right corner. To leave full-screen mode, click the ESC button on your keyboard.
More Information tab
A selection of metadata is visible in the MORE INFORMATION tab on the right-side of the Universal Viewer. This section can be displayed or hidden.
Embedding
Publicly accessible images can be embedded into other websites. As with the example below, the embed button shows HTML code to repurpose the image elsewhere, e.g. a digital exhibit. To access this option, click the Share icon in the lower-left corner of the Universal Viewer. The below example is from the record "American Red Cross truck.”
Downloading
The download option, displayed in some prior screen shots, has been disabled and removed from the current version of DC. This reflects an institutional decision.
Limitations
Non-image files will not display in the Universal Viewer, including thumbnails.
